Waking up this morning I realized just how badly I needed that rest day yesterday.
I can normally workout seven days a week because of the way I do my split, which gives me enough rest for each body part before working it again. But I have been pushing myself harder lately, stacking workouts and adding additional sets and reps on the days I was feeling good. All of that added up and I was beginning to feel burned out.
The funny thing about rest is that usually the first sign you are not getting enough rest if you lose control of your sleeping pattern. You can no longer sleep through the night, or you have trouble falling asleep in the first place. I recognized that I was tossing and turning for hours, just barely awake but not quite asleep, and then I would dive into a deep sleep about an hour and a half before my normal wake up time and end up waking groggy and grumpy.
But let’s be honest. For most of us, not getting enough rest is not the problem. Getting too much rest is the problem. In most cases people get nothing but rest and no exercise at all. This also messes with your sleeping pattern. Or people drink too much and then wonder why they can’t sleep, or they pass out but the actual sleep quality is extremely low.
I was able to fix my rest problem by taking one complete day off and getting two full nights of uninterrupted sleep. I had to fight the urge and the desire to workout that day, but it paid off. This morning I feel ready to conquer the gym.
