Starter Guide
I spend more time thinking about what I am going to write about and much less time actually writing. My write, edit, and review process typically lasts several weeks (sometimes several months) before an essay gets published. I also occasionally go back and edit an essay for clarity (never for content) from time to time. The collection of essays compiled into this guide are meant to best represent my philosophy and ideas about the cost of stuff and consumption, how to enjoy every moment in life, and how to start changing now.
- How to Have Compassion talks about how to let go of our need to control other people’s lives and just be compassionate toward others without judging.
- Reckless Extravagance is a short discussion on the dangers of consumerism and why it should be avoided, while emphasizing that volunteer poverty is unnecessary and it is perfectly okay to own nice things.
- The Cost of Consumerism points out that when possessions become our identity and the way we participate in culture, our possessions end up taking away our time to enjoy life.
- Rethink Time Management (and why it is unnecessary for professionals) reflects on the artificial limits we place on ourselves and our creativity by utilizing “productivity” tools.
- Consumerism & Minimalism answers a question posed by a friend when he learned of my dive into minimalism. Do you really have to give up everything to be a minimalist? Can I never make large purchases on credit again?
- I would also recommend this, this, and this to get you up to speed.

You may have noticed there are no comments on my site. I love hearing from my readers. What I don’t love is the time it takes to mediate all the comments and handle spam. That’s valuable time I could be spending with my family or creating new content. If you have something you would like to share please contact me on twitter or
