BSN N.O.-Xplode Xtreme Energy Edge Fruit Punch Preworkout – Review

BLUF: Tastes like sour candy, expired watermelon, and dish soap, but the effects kick in within minutes. Under-dosed. Not recommended.

You expect certain things from a pre-workout. You want it to help you feel energized and motivated, to help you recover faster between sets, and to generally make you feel like you can go harder. BSN’s N.O.-Xplode Xtreme Energy provided none of this, and it also tastes like a swirl of leftover chemicals.

Here’s what the company has to say:

“N.O.-XPLODE XE™ EDGE is the result of a global search for a unique blend of botanical ingredients that will help deliver an intense pre-workout formula to have you crushing it in the weight room. Ingredients such as Guayusa, an Amazonian super leaf, Yohimbe, from the West African evergreen, and Macuna, a Tropical legume have been combined with 325mg of Caffeine, 1.6g of Beta-Alanine, and a 1g Citrulline blend to support extreme energy, feel, and focus in 1 scoop. Get your performance EDGE with N.O.-XPLODE XE EDGE.”

As noted in the literature, N.O.XE specs out with 1.6 grams of Beta-Alanine, 1 gram of Citrulline, 325 grams of caffeine, and a bunch of other ingredients that have little reputable effect on your workout and that probably don’t need to be supplemented. Other than having too much caffeine, N.O.-Xplode is severely underdosed and doesn’t even contain standard supplements like BCAAs and Creatine.  The manufacturer even advertises that you need to stack N.O.XE with their Pumped Edge product to get the best effect. To me, this just means they are splitting your pre-workout into two products and making you pay double for it.

Preworkout Ingredient Profile Comparison
Ingredient Product Dose Clinical Dose
Caffeine 325mg 300mg
Creatine (HCL or Mono) 0g 2g or 5g
Citrulline Malate 1g 6g
Beta-Alanine 1.6g 2g
BCAA (2:1:1) 0g 6g

As soon as you open the package the fine powder wafts out like a fine mist. Before being mixed it smelled like cherries in a rose garden. This had me thinking it was going to be pretty tasty. I was tricked. After mixing it smelled like chemicals with a sour tartness.

On top of that, it doesn’t mix very well. There were plenty of grinds left in the cup. It did, however, get surprisingly thick, but this didn’t help the flavor. It tasted like sour candy, expired watermelon, and dish soap. Not pleasing at all.

Within minutes if taking N.O.-Xplode, I felt the Beta-Alanine kick in. I enjoy the tingling feeling of Beta-Alanine. I think it’s because I associate the tingling feeling with working out. When it kicks in I know it’s about to be on, so that was a plus for N.O.XE, unfortunately, it did not last.

I didn’t get the tunnel vision feeling, but I did notice a deliberate focus on each rep that I put in. However, I didn’t feel any stronger or any more energetic. In fact, other than focusing on each individual rep, I felt pretty normal throughout the workout.

Overall, even though I could feel it within minutes, it had little positive effect on my workout and probably isn’t worth the money, not even for the placebo effect.
